The work
Rancher at Brown’s Ranch near Bismarck, North Dakota, who rebuilt a degraded 5,000-acre operation into a profitable, input-light regenerative system. Author of Dirt to Soil (2018) and co-founder of the consultancy Understanding Ag and the Soil Health Academy. His principles are now standard framing across USDA NRCS and industry soil health programs.
Originally five principles. Brown and Understanding Ag now teach six, having added know your context as the first — which is the one that decides whether the other five apply to a given operation.
