We design food forests and regenerative systems, and we work the ground that tests them: Run-a-Muck Farms, twenty-five acres in Dover, Pennsylvania. Fifteen years inside industrial systems taught one discipline, and living systems answer to it too — find the constraint, close the loop, keep it running.

Design starts by reading what the site already does, then giving each problem a job.

Standing water isn’t a drainage failure. It’s a pond you haven’t dug yet, sitting exactly where the land already told you to put it.

Waste is a resource in the wrong place, at the wrong time, in the wrong form. Change one of the three and it stops being waste.

Every pest is a signal, not an enemy. Something in the system is missing a predator, a habitat, or a job for somebody to do.

Daniel Crawford spent fifteen years inside industrial systems: electrician, then facilities and capital projects — leading a mill expansion, automating lines, and standing as plant liaison on a half-billion-dollar build. The discipline was always the same. Find the constraint, close the loop, keep it running.

He now applies that discipline to living systems. Run-a-Muck Farms is a 25-acre permaculture homestead in Dover, Pennsylvania: a tree nut nursery, cut flowers, pastured poultry, hemp, and a fermentation program that turns waste streams into fertility. The farm is the studio’s test bed — nothing gets designed for a client that hasn’t been asked to work here first.

What is permaculture?

Permaculture is a design system for meeting human needs while regenerating the land that meets them. The name compresses “permanent agriculture” — later widened to “permanent culture” — and points at the goal: arrange a garden, a farm, or a whole settlement so its parts feed one another the way a forest does. It is less a fixed method than a way of seeing — observe first, work with nature rather than against it, and let the site tell you what it wants to become.

Who developed it, and when?

The term was coined in the mid-1970s by two Australians — Bill Mollison, a naturalist and teacher, and David Holmgren, then his student. Their 1978 book Permaculture One put the idea into the world. Mollison became its tireless global teacher; Holmgren gave it a lasting intellectual spine, later distilling the practice into twelve design principles. Neither claimed to invent the underlying wisdom — they synthesized it into something teachable.

What did it grow out of?

Permaculture stands on older shoulders: Masanobu Fukuoka’s natural farming, P. A. Yeomans’ Keyline water design, J. Russell Smith’s work on tree crops, and the systems ecology of Howard Odum — alongside the accumulated knowledge of Indigenous and traditional land practices the world over. Its own contribution was to weave those threads into a single framework anyone could learn, test on their own ground, and adapt.

What are its core ideas?

Three ethics anchor everything: care for the earth, care for people, and a fair share of the surplus returned to both. From there flow practical principles — observe and interact, catch and store energy, produce no waste, use edges, value the marginal, respond to change. Working tools like zones and sectors organize a site by how often you tend it and how sun, wind, and water move through it. The through-line is a stubborn optimism: the problem is the solution.

How did it spread around the world?

Mostly by teaching. The Permaculture Design Certificate — a 72-hour course Mollison codified in the 1980s — let the system replicate person to person, hands in the soil, with no central authority and no franchise. That open structure carried permaculture from Tasmania to drylands, cities, and smallholdings on every inhabited continent, reshaping itself to fit each climate and culture it met.

Where is it going with technology?

The next chapter is digital. Satellite imagery, LiDAR, and drones now read a site’s water and contour before a shovel breaks ground; inexpensive sensors track soil moisture and microclimate across whole seasons; and design software models the guilds, zones, and flows that once lived only in a practitioner’s notebook. Used well, none of it replaces observation — it extends it, surfacing patterns across time and scale that a single pair of eyes never could. That meeting of old ecological literacy and new instruments is exactly where this studio works.

An open record of cultivars filed by habit, use, and species — who developed each one, what it is, whether it is freely propagated or under patent, and where to find it. Every entry cites its source, and a field nobody has sourced says so.

None of this was invented here. Someone spent a life on each piece of it, and most of them are still working.

An open record of the researchers, breeders, teachers, and practitioners whose results this studio builds on — some who put the ground under the whole field decades ago, some doing the work right now. Each entry says what the person is known for, where they work, and where to read them, and cites its sources. No portraits: a photograph carries rights a record like this cannot claim.

They are rough in places, they change without warning, and they are open to anyone willing to tell us where they break.
