Description
‘Yates’ and ‘Juhl’ are the same plant under two names — a synonymy worth recording, because a grower who buys both is buying one cultivar twice and has not solved their pollination or diversity problem at all.
It came out of Talbot Nursery in the 1950s and genetic analysis places it as a descendant of ‘Early Golden’, which by now will read as unsurprising.
Synonymy is the quieter cousin of the misidentification problem recorded in the hickory file. There, a name was simply wrong. Here, two names are right and refer to one thing. Both failures look identical from a catalogue.
