Description
The cultivar with the clearest pedigree in the American list: a deliberate cross of ‘Ezyoff’ with ‘Adams No. 2’, made at the New York Agricultural Experiment Station at Geneva and released in 1964.
That makes it one of the first American elderberries with a documented controlled-cross parentage rather than a wild or open-pollinated origin. Nearly everything else on the American side of this file is a plant somebody found, or a seedling of a plant somebody found.
Sixty years on, the current recommendations are wild selections again. Read that as a statement about how little sustained breeding this crop has had, rather than as a verdict on ‘York’.
