The Cheapest Fertility on the Farm Is Already Here
Waste is a resource in the wrong place, at the wrong time, in the wrong form. Change one of the three and the pallet of inputs stops arriving.
Walk a small farm in August and you can often find fertility leaving the property in a truck and fertility arriving on the property in a bag, sometimes in the same week. That is not a moral failure. It is a form problem, and form problems are solvable.
A fermentation program is one way to close that gap. The whole category runs on material a place already produces: green material pulled at its most vigorous, cull fruit, eggshell, leaf litter, forest duff from inside the tree line.
Two traditions, one idea
Korean Natural Farming, systematized by Cho Han-Kyu, works by culturing what is already thriving locally and feeding it back. Indigenous microorganisms gathered from nearby woods. Fermented plant juice from fast-growing shoot tips. Lactic acid bacteria from rice wash and milk. Water-soluble calcium from eggshell. The premise is that the best-adapted biology for a piece of ground is already living on it.
JADAM, developed by his son Youngsang Cho, pushes the same logic toward radical cheapness and simplicity. Fewer steps, larger volumes, ordinary buckets: a microbial solution brewed from forest leaf mold and a boiled potato in salted water, liquid fertilizer from whatever green material is at hand, a wetting agent made from lye and oil.
Practitioners argue about which is better. Both are doing the identical thing at different price points, which is converting on-site material into a form roots and leaves can actually use.
The economics are the point
The JADAM method in particular is designed around cost. A batch of liquid fertilizer is water, a container, and time, and the green material going into it was going to be pulled anyway. That is the claim the system makes for itself, and it is the reason it spread: the inputs are things a farm is already throwing away.
The real return, though, is not the line item. It is the dependency removed. Fertility made on site does not have a supply chain, a price shock, or a delivery window. In a bad year that is worth more than the savings.
Where people get burned
Three honest cautions, because the enthusiasm around this can outrun the practice.
These are not sterile products. Ferments made from manure or fish carry real pathogen considerations, and food safety rules on application intervals exist for good reason. Know the rules that apply to what you sell.
Feeding biology does not replace knowing your chemistry. A soil test still tells you about pH and base saturation, and no amount of microbial solution fixes a calcium problem you never measured.
An unrecorded batch is a story, not a method. Same material, ten degrees warmer, four days longer, and it is a different product. Write down inputs, dates, temperature, and what you observed. That is the entire difference between a practice and a rumor, and it is why Ferment exists.
Start with one stream
Do not convert a whole operation at once. Pick the single output you currently pay to remove or watch rot, and give it one job for one season. Green material into liquid fertilizer. Eggshell into soluble calcium. Bedding into growing ground.
Measure what it displaced. Then pick the next one. Fertility built this way compounds quietly, and after a few seasons the pallet stops coming without anyone having made a decision about it.
