The other major ‘Major’ descendant, crossing the old Kentucky seedling onto ‘Mahan’ for size.
It is worth putting ‘Lakota’ and ‘Kanza’ side by side, because they are the same strategy run twice: take the scab resistance and hardiness of a northern chance seedling, cross it onto something that brings nut size or timing, and select. Both worked. The resistance in both traces to one tree found in a Kentucky woodlot before the First World War, which is the strongest argument this database can make for why unimproved local material is worth collecting before it is gone.
