Description
The southeastern incumbent, and the cultivar three University of Georgia releases were bred to replace.
It held commercial orchards from Georgia to Texas on kernel quality and reliability, and it is susceptible to scab — which in a humid climate means a spray programme is not optional, it is the cost of the cultivar. The economics of a fungicide schedule are what made a scab-resistant replacement worth a decade of breeding.
The pattern is by now familiar from this database: ‘Barcelona’ in hazelnut, ‘Stuart’ before this one. An incumbent is rarely the best plant available. It is the plant the infrastructure was built around, and the one whose weaknesses everyone has learned to pay for.
